As seen here, in 1980, every bottle on the shelf was still glass.
During the battle with Big Plastic, the glass industry argued for the benefits of glass, like its eco-friendliness, and the ability to clean or melt down for reuse (Coca Cola had a 97% return rate of their bottles), which fueled a local recycling loop.
But Big Plastic prevailed.
Plastic was (seemingly) cheaper and they scammed everyone with its "recyclability."
While cheaper, the price we've paid is steep.
Marine plastic pollution costs 10s-of-billions per year. (r)
The price we're paying for microplastics invading all of our bodies and brains is incalculable. (r)
