Good morning! Here's your Saturday 7 roundup! 💘 Is this sweetener causing heart attacks: The bombshell news in the health world was a new study out of Nature Medicine showing a strong link between the popular sweetener, erythritol, and major cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke (r).
Before I dove deeper into the research, I was certain it was just going to be a case of "sick
user bias." What I mean by this is: diabetes is a top risk factor for these cardiovascular events, and diabetics may be more likely to switch out sugar for erythritol to improve their blood
sugar, or simply produce more endogenously via the pentose phosphate pathway. Thus, it's easy to confound the erythritol with diabetes, the actual problem. This is known as reverse causation. While I
still think this is mostly a case of reverse causation, as I dug a bit into it, I had a similar reaction to Nicholas Norwitz who posted a nice 3-minute review.
The big limitation of the
study that I see is that they only measured the erythritol in the blood and not consumption. It's hard to know if those elevated blood levels were from eating it or making more of it endogenously.
My conclusions: - If you NEED sugar, I'd address that issue first (carnivore is a great way to combat these cravings).
- If you WANT some sugar / sweetness, I'd consider limiting erythritol if you are higher on the CVD risk curve (history of CVD, diabetes).
In your mouth there is a battle between the strength of acid attacks and the strength of the defenses. Most dentists focus solely on the acid. "Limit your sugar intake." Few dentists focus on fortifying the defenses. There are many critical nutrients that help strengthen the
defenses, like the minerals in saliva and fat-soluble vitamins A, D3, and K2 found mostly in animal foods.
I see people make this
mistake every day. Yet, I just did it myself. I enrolled in an online program a few months ago, got halfway through, and fell off. Looking back, I realize I didn't take my own advice. In Meat Health Academy, I tell all new students, "Put me in your calendar!" What I mean by this is: schedule time in your calendar to go through the program. Go at your own pace but be sure to go! Don't rely on time to magically appear. The key is to turn our best intentions into concrete plans. P.S. I want to give a shoutout to Judy and Victor, two new Academy students who did put me in their February calendars, went straight through the program, and are on their way to newfound health and fitness.
✏️ Who turned professional (and how you can too):
It's official. I became a professional artist, lol! After finishing my last drawing, I posted this picture on LinkedIn (yes...this is the current state of my living room 😂)
I got a message from a
connection, Jason, who asked if I sold prints of the Bitcoin drawing. I had never considered it because, 1 - who would want to buy my art, and 2 - it seemed like a lot of work to scan, print, frame,
ship. That was until a few months ago. I learned I could automate this entire process by creating an Etsy store and connecting it to another company, Printful, who does prints and shipping. It goes like this: someone visits the Etsy store, sees the art, and if they buy, the order is processed in Printful where they print and ship it. All automatic. 🤯 So, one afternoon a few months ago, I thought, "why not?" In a few hours I had a live store. Though I never told anyone because, well, 1 -
who would want to buy my art. But since Jason asked, I sent him the link to the Etsy store, and he became my first art customer! Shoutout to Jason: Thank you the support and the 1st sale of my art career :) Mind-blowing to live at a time where in a few hours you can have a business up and running that does almost all the work for you...well besides creating the art (and they take most of the cut, but still amazing
nonetheless).
🧠 What quote I've been thinking about:
I don't have talent, so I get up earlier. – Henry Rollins
I came across this simple
rule for deciding if you should outsource a task: Take your annual income and divide it by 8,000.
If you can pay someone less than that per hour to take a task off your plate, it makes sense.
National Geographic
released the 2022 Photo of the year. And this might be the shot of the year: half court, buzzer beater, for the upset. This kind of got me excited for March Madness, less than 2 weeks away!
As always, it's an absolute pleasure and honor getting to spend some time with you, hope you have a great weekend! Kevin P.S. When I was in college, two of my friends, a physicist and biologist, started dating. But it didn’t work because there wasn’t any chemistry. However, when
Oxygen and Magnesium went on a date, everyone was like, "OMg"! They never thought it would work. But I knew the critics had it backwards and there was a strong bond. My Bachelor's in Chemistry was no accident 😂
