This was my breakfast on
Monday.
I had 6 oz of beef, beef fat trimmings, 3 eggs, 1 cup of raw goat's milk, and some orange dots.
The orange dots are salmon roe (fish eggs).
I think of salmon roe as a "supplement." I take it occasionally, notably in the winter because it's a good source of vitamin D.
NOTE: It's also
good to have in the summer because it has an antioxidant called astaxanthin which improves the skin's resistance to the sun's UV rays. It can also promote fat burning by turning down SCD1 and PPAR gamma and turning up CPT1 and PPAR alpha.
Besides vitamin D, these little orange dots are nutrient packed, containing a good source of iodine and a fantastic source of DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid).
I buy it in bulk from Vital Choice and keep it in the freezer so it doesn't go bad. I use a sharp knife and twist it to excavate a small frozen spoonful, maybe 1 tablespoon (~10 grams), and eat it as is (frozen).
It does seem expensive, but it breaks down to about $0.50/day to get all the DHA you need in the best form with the least amount of potential downsides (i.e. like if trying to get this much from fish oil pills, or far worse, plant-based sources of ALA which is
horribly converted to DHA and EPA).
FYI - This is what I
ate the rest of the day.
