📘 Does this book need an update:
Dr. Westin A. Price published his seminal book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration," in 1939.
It's one of my favorite books, not only because he was a fellow dentist that was obsessed with nutrition and its connection in oral and physical health, but because I think it's one of the most important works of nutrition in the last century.
But it's over 80 years old...is it outdated?
What did Dr. Price miss...

💊 How much creatine should you take:
Creatine is one of the most researched supplements. It consistently shows enhancements in physical and mental performance.
Almost everyone is "creatine deficient" if we define it as not having optimal stores.
When I read the creatine research, it screams at me: "Just eat more meat!" Like "creatine deficiency" is a proxy measure for how much we undereat meat.
The body only makes about 1g/day, the rest we must get from our diet (3-5 g/day to optimize creatine stores).
Since it only comes from animal foods (notably red meat), the only way to optimize creatine stores without supplementation is to eat a meat heavy diet.
About 1.5-2 lbs for women and 2-3 lbs for men.

🤝 How to overcome gravity:
Every time I go to an event like this it reminds me how important it is to have community. To have like-minded people to learn from, to lean on, to have fun with.
Creating change, whether in your health and fitness or elsewhere, is difficult because it's unfamiliar. Often the people in our immediate circles don't share our goals, hopes, and dreams. So, there is a constant tug trying to pull us back to the status quo of our group, the gravity we are trying to escape to create the change we want.
But we can counter this inertial force by attaching to a different pulling force. Joining a community, whereby it's normal and expected to live a certain way, provides a counter-pulling force. A new gravity to pull us to success and keep us there.

😁 How to be happy:
Happy isn't my favorite word. It's vague.
I feel most "myself" (maybe "fulfilled" is the right word) when I'm doing creative or purposeful work, but I wouldn't describe the resultant emotion as happy. It's often accompanied by a lack of feeling at all, like "flow state," where time goes by in the blink of an eye. Perhaps "happy" encompasses this as well as other positive emotions like fulfillment, fun, excitement, peace, awe.
Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives.
These personal ties help weather the storms of life, delay mental and physical decline, and predict long healthy lives better than social class, IQ or genetics.

🧠 What quote I've been thinking about:
"Too often, we fall into an all-or-nothing cycle with our habits. The problem is not slipping up; the problem is thinking that if you can't do something perfectly, then you shouldn't do it at all."
James Clear

📈 What does inflation mean:
At this rate you lose ½ your purchasing power every 6.5 years.
Just to keep up with inflation, you'd have to be a top 1% investor.
But that's assuming 9.1% is the real number. It's closer to 13% if we adjust for real-time housing inflation (Case-Shiller Index).
Bitcoin acts as the hedge against perpetual monetary debasement and has never performed well as a classic CPI “inflation hedge.”

🚀 My next career:
I love space. "The Martian" is one of my favorite books. I'm currently watching "For All Mankind." And I want to be an astronaut.

As always, it's an absolute pleasure and an honor getting to spend some time with you, hope you have a great weekend!

P.S.
I was on the American Diabetes Association's website, and it asked me if I accepted cookies. I was like, "that explains it."
A Saturday morning roundup on health and wealth, art and science, creativity and innovation, laughs and life by Kevin Stock.
