🐁 What makes mice (and humans) fat:
Left: Mice with a diet high in saturated fat; low in LA*
Right: Mice with a diet low in saturated fat; high in LA (~8% from soybean oil)
The experiment controlled for calories, yet the mice with the high LA got fat.
The average American gets about 8% of their calories from LA just like the fat mice.
A similar "experiment" was done in France.
The French ate the same number of calories in 1970 as they did in 2000. But over these 30 years the French got obese. While calories, activity, and overall food were remarkably similar over this time, there was just one major change...a 3X increase in sunflower oil, 60% PUFA.
Why do PUFAs / LA make us fat?
The oxidation of saturated fat results in a buildup of ROS, an important signaling molecule, which says "all full here" when insulin knocks on the door. A diet high in PUFAs (vegetable seed oils) will not signal "full" like saturated fat, and the fat cell will remain sensitive to insulin and keep on storing.
*Key:
PUFA = Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids
LA = Linoleic Acid (a specific kind of PUFA)

🌱 Why would anyone avoid eating plants:
Meat Health launched our new website this week and we created a Phytotoxin Index to help answer the question "why would anyone avoid eating plants?"
You can select a plant-based food and it will show you common phytotoxins in that food, or you can select a common phytotoxin, like oxalates, and it will show you which foods have considerable amounts of that compound.
We will continue to build this out over time, adding more detail about these phytotoxins, but next time someone asks you "what's wrong with spinach" you can send them to the Phytotoxin Index (and you can also send them the Health Dangers of a Plant-based Diet book too :)

👨 What's up with men in America:
I came across this chart about the struggles of men in America. While I'm sure there is some selection bias here, the stats don't look good.
Men are falling out of high school at higher rates and now make up just 40% of college students. They make up the majority of homeless, suicides, and incarcerations. More men aged 18-34 live with their parents than a romantic partner.
Maybe it has something to do with the average male's testosterone dropping 50% over the last 2 decades? Perhaps the rise of fatherless homes since the 70s plays a role (which I think has reversed the last decade)?
While I don't have the answers here (nor am I one to take dating advice from) I did see that 90% of single women are looking for just 6% of the men (6' foot or taller), so maybe if you're a guy looking to get out of your parent's basement, measure your height in your tallest shoes 🤷♂️

Help people become the best version of themselves (defined by them, not the organization) and support them in putting these ever-growing skills and knowledge in action.
